From wine tasting to paragliding: your ultimate guide of things to do in Tenerife for couples
If you thought that the list of things to do for couples in Tenerife started and finished with sunbathing, eating and drinking, think again! From romance to adventure, Tenerife has everything you need for the perfect couples’ holiday.
Travelling together as a couple really is one of the best ways to strengthen your connection, improve communication and generally enjoy each other’s company, removed from all the daily stress of work, jobs around the home, traffic, rain, etc. Quality time together and the chance to really relax. What could go wrong? Well, you’d be surprised…
While the mantra to couple holidays should, ideally, be something like “All you need is love”, if the studies carried out are to be believed, the mantra actually sounds a lot more like “Put your damned phone down, will you?!?”
According to The Daily Telegraph, over 75% of couples have at least two serious arguments during a two-week holiday and over half of couples argue about their partner spending too much time on their phones, unable and unwilling to disconnect from their work.
Sound familiar? No, of course not. We’re talking about other couples, not you.
Other main reasons for fighting revealed in the survey include:
- Men checking out other women around the pool and on the beach.
- Different ideas on how to enjoy the holiday – one partner wanting to engage in activities and the other wanting to relax.
- Unfair distribution of the packing and organising responsibilities, etc. One partner feeling they do way too much.
- Where to eat and drink: different tastes.
- Money – one thinking the other is spending far too much.
None of these sound at all familiar to any of you, we’re sure. But the truth is that quality time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is more than you usually spend with anyone, and sometimes, well, it can all get a bit much.
In Tenerife, this really needn’t be the case. Because while the island may seem small on a map, its possibilities are endless, meaning that there really is the perfect activity for every couple out there, from the party animals to sunbed devotees, the gym bunnies to the foodies.
Reignite that spark with our endless list of couples’ activities in Tenerife
We’ve put together just a few options for every type of couple. There are many more where these came from, but it’s enough to see that when it comes to things to do in Tenerife for couples, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If one of you is a party animal and the other more sporty, you can take it in turns to choose the activities. Better yet, why not do them all? You’ll be so busy and tired, you won’t have the time or energy to argue, much less check your work emails!
Whatever you choose, here’s our top tip: disable your email notifications and only use your phone to take photos or to look up where to go next. Practice some mindfulness, which means being fully present and enjoying the moment, and see just how much more you get out of your trip!
So, choose which category best describes you and your partner and see which activities are perfect for you:
Adrenaline junkies: Like to get your pulse racing? How about getting a birds-eye view of the island and some of the most amazing selfies imaginable by going on a paragliding adventure! There are several flight options, both in the south and north of the island, with experienced companies that offer single and tandem flights. Or, head underwater and discover some of the fascinating shipwrecks off the Tenerife coast with an unforgettable scuba-diving excursion. There are several to choose from, including former WW2 vessels and there’s even a shipwrecked aeroplane off the cost of El Sauzal in the north. Each offers its own fascinating story, not to mention a considerable adrenaline boost!
Nature lovers: If your idea of a perfect day in Tenerife includes some hiking boots, a map and exploring the most remote places of the island, you will absolutely love Anaga Rural Park in the north of the island. This stunning Biosphere Reserve offers endless nature trails to explore the ancient laurisilva forest, which looks every bit as magical as the enchanted forests from your childhood stories. If you prefer to stay in the south, however, Hell’s Gorge, known locally as Barranco del Infierno, in Adeje, is a great trek to embark upon, with a spectacular waterfall along the way.
Romantics: Fan of some old-school romance? Absolutely nothing wrong with that, and Tenerife is the perfect destination for romantics! So picture this: you and your loved one, watching the sun set from the highest point of Spain, then sipping hot chocolate and being shown the Milky Way and a host of other famous constellations through professional telescopes with expert guides on hand to give you a masterclass in astronomy. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? In real life it’s even better. When it comes to romantic activities in Tenerife, this takes the crown.
Enjoying a picture-perfect beach like Montaña Amarilla all to yourselves or a natural pool beside the ocean, such as the ones found near the cute coastal village of Alcalá known as the Paseo La Jaquita, watching the sun go down over La Gomera is also a simple get hugely romantic way to spend your time in Tenerife. Add a bottle of something cold and bubbly and you’ve got yourselves a Hollywood-esque experience right there.
Foodies: If you’re a food lover, Tenerife is a great choice for a holiday. Its roots are steeped in banana cultivation, of course, but the gastronomy has come a long way since then. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that we have 5 Michelin-starred restaurants on the island. If you prefer to stick to your healthy eating programme, you’ll find an unbeatable and colourful selection of deliciously fresh fruit and vegetables, which make it easy to follow the guidelines when it comes to “eating the rainbow”. Then there’s the endless variety of fish and seafood, caught locally and daily and so fresh it melts in your mouth. Combine it with the most quintessentially Canarian food of all – red and green mojo sauces, and you’ll have an unforgettable taste explosion.
If you’re the kind of person who thinks “to hell with the diet” on holiday, prepare yourself for a feast. Delicious local goats’ cheese; fried, seasoned pork chunks known as carne fiesta (“party meat”); a variety of different croquettes including tuna, spinach and ham; fried calamari and desserts that are as decadent as they are delicious, all washed down by local wine. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, it tastes even better.
Tenerife’s gastronomy is so varied that we have a separate blog devoted entirely to it:
Wine tasting: A wine tasting experience under the sun is always a good idea on holiday if you and your loved one are partial to a nice glass of red, white or rosé. Several of the island’s small, family-run wineries offer tasting experiences, giving you an insight into the more traditional techniques still largely used in Tenerife, as well as a look into the history of the winemaking in the Canaries, which dates back centuries. Bodegas Monje and La Casa del Vino, both in the north, are just two examples of great wine tasting experiences, but there are several more.
Fitness fanatics: Name a sport and the chances are you can do it here. Tenerife’s unbeatable climate year-round means that the entire island is basically one enormous open-air gym, and that’s only considering the land-based activities. Then there are the water and air-based ones, too…
So, the only thing you need to decide, is how much effort you want to put in. Here’s a taster of what’s out there for you to try: Mountain biking, climbing, kayak, kitesurf, hiking, running, swimming, golf, yoga, sailing… and on and on and on. Take your pick!
Party animals: The south of Tenerife is well known for its party scene and rightly so. But aside from clubs such as Magic and Papagayo Beach Club, both located in Playa de las Américas, those really wanting to dance the night away should make sure that their holiday dates coincide with any of the many music festivals held in south Tenerife every year. Ritmos del Mundo, I love Music, Summer Jam and Arona Summer Festival are just some of the events that are now globally recognised as some of the most important dates in the calendar for electronic music fans. Past appearances include David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Nervo and Craig David. Experience a taste of Ibiza, right here in Tenerife.
Masters of Zen: If your perfect holiday routine could be summed up like this: Sunbed-pool-bar- repeat, we hear you. The year-round Canarian sunshine and endless blue skies can make any kind of getting up and moving around very unappealing indeed. Why would you, when you can just lie back, drink something chilled and soak up those rays right? For some out-of-the-hotel unwinding in style, beach clubs such Coqueluche in Adeje, Strasse on Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz or Le Club in Fañabe, make a welcome change of scenery without taking anything away from your goal of relaxing.
As you can see the only limit to what you can do as a couple in Tenerife is really your imagination!
